The soundtrack

Five sounds, dug out of the crates

  • Northern soul

Fast, rare and made for dancing — the sound that grew up on the dance floors of the north of England, and the one our regulars ask for by name.

  • Motown

Hit after hit from the Detroit label that wrote the pop songbook.

  • Funk

Deep basslines and tight breaks that don’t let anyone stay in their seat.

  • Soul

Warm, heartfelt and made for a long Saturday night rather than a quick one.

  • Nu-disco

Modern grooves with a disco heartbeat — glittering basslines and four-on-the-floor, played on vinyl at a volume that still lets you talk.

Why vinyl

No algorithm, no screens, no shuffle

A DJ with a bag of records has to choose. That’s the whole point: records are dug out for the room on the night, not queued up by a machine that already knows what’s next. It’s slower, warmer, and it sounds better through a proper system than a phone through a speaker.

We’re a screen-free pub all week — no TVs and no sports broadcasts, just background music and conversation. Same rule on a DJ night, which is why the bar and the garden are the only places to be.

December

The two big festive nights

Every December the records make way for the two nights the whole town goes out. Both run 6pm till late, with funk, soul, disco, house, Motown and Northern soul.
