Free to hire · Birthdays · Christenings · Wakes · Work dos
A free function room, a garden, and no TVs on the wall.
The Nelson Arms is a stone-walled community pub in the middle of Morley with a 600 m² beer garden, part of it covered. We host small private functions — birthdays, christenings, celebrations of life, work dos and community meetings — in the lounge or outside in the yard. There is no hire charge. Tell us the date, the numbers and what you have in mind, and we’ll tell you straight whether it works.
What you actually get
A proper pub, not a function suite
-
No hire charge
Hiring the room or the garden costs nothing. Your guests buy their own drinks at the bar and that is the whole arrangement — there is no room fee to find before the day.
-
A stone-walled lounge
Inside, the pub is what it has always been: stone walls, a real bar, chairs worth sitting on. It’s a room people arrive and stay in, rather than a hired box with strip lighting.
-
600 m² of garden
Out the back there’s around 600 m² of beer garden with plenty of seating, part of it covered. That covered bit is what makes an outdoor summer do work even when the weather has other ideas.
-
No screens anywhere
No TVs, no Sky Sports, no football on a wall behind somebody’s speech. The Nelly is screen-free all week, which is exactly why people book it for the occasions where the room should be about the people in it.
-
Real ale and a full bar
Ossett White Rat on the hand pull as the resident Yorkshire cask, a rotating guest cask from northern breweries, plus Red Stripe, Guinness, Neck Oil, Cruzcampo and Stella on draught, ciders, wine, spirits and Guinness 0.0.
-
Food in the yard
BlakJak Pizza bakes Canotto pizza in a wood-fired oven from a converted horsebox in our yard, Friday and Saturday, 4pm–8pm, £10–£12 each. Bar snacks are on at the bar too, and you’re welcome to bring in a takeaway from anywhere local.
-
Easy to reach, easy to park
We’re on Victoria Road, about 0.3 miles from Morley Town Hall and Queen Street, with buses 51 and 52 stopping within two minutes. Free on-site car park with around 12 spaces, plus free on-street parking on Victoria Road. No hunting for a space on a side street with a cake in the boot.
-
Dogs welcome
Well-behaved dogs on leads are welcome in the lounge and right through the garden, with water bowls and treats at the bar. Useful if the dog is part of the family and the family are the function.
-
Bring your own food
There’s no “outside food not permitted” sign here. If you want to bring a takeaway in from anywhere local for a function, that’s fine — plenty of people order in and eat it in the garden.
Want to see the bar before you commit? Here’s what’s on the taps, and here’s the garden.
What people book it for
Occasions we’re asked about most
-
Birthdays and milestones
Eighteenths, twenty-firsts, fortieths, fiftieths and the ones people stop counting. The garden does the job for a summer birthday, the lounge for one that runs into the evening. Under-18s are welcome with an adult until 8pm, and we run Challenge 25 at the bar, so anyone who looks under 25 will be asked for photo ID.
-
Wakes and celebrations of life
If you’re arranging a wake or a celebration of life in Morley, tell us the date and roughly how many are coming and we’ll do everything we can to make the room work. A screen-free lounge, real ale on the bar and a garden to step out into is, for a lot of families, exactly the right shape for that afternoon.
-
Christenings and baby showers
A christening lunch that spills into the garden, or a baby shower that wants a room with some character rather than a hired box. Dogs on leads are welcome inside and out, and there’s space for a pushchair without it becoming an obstacle course.
-
Work dos and team nights
Office parties, leaving dos, retirement send-offs, team nights and Christmas dos. We’re five minutes from Morley town hall and a short train from Leeds, so nobody has to draw the short straw and drive. December brings Mad Friday and New Year’s Eve too.
-
Clubs, teams and community meetings
Quiz teams, darts and dominoes leagues, residents’ associations, committees and AGMs. Quiet in the daytime and early evening with no screens competing for attention, which makes it a genuinely decent room for a meeting that has to get through an agenda.
-
A big night already in the diary
Sometimes the easiest function is joining one that already exists. The Wednesday quiz takes groups, the monthly vinyl night lands on the last Saturday, and both festive DJ nights run 6pm till late. Tell us you’re coming with a crowd.
How it works
Three steps, no packages, no upselling
We’re a pub, not a conference centre, so we keep this simple. There is no hire charge and no booking system to fight with, and nobody will try to sell you a package you didn’t ask for.
- 1. Tell us the basics. Date, rough numbers, the occasion, and whether you want to be inside or out. The form at the bottom of this page takes two minutes.
- 2. We come back to you. We’ll say whether the date works and what the room or garden will look like on that night. There’s nothing to pay for the space.
- 3. Turn up and enjoy it. You don’t need tickets and your guests don’t need to book anything. Order at the bar like everyone else in the pub.
Rather ask a person? Email thenellymorley1@gmail.com — the pub has no landline, so email is the reliable route and it’s usually answered the same day.

Function room questions
Can children come to The Nelson Arms?
Yes, until 8pm. Under-18s are welcome with an adult in the lounge and beer garden until 8pm. We run Challenge 25, so anyone who looks under 25 will be asked for photo ID at the bar.
Can I hold a private party at The Nelson Arms?
Yes. We host small private functions, birthdays and community meetings with no hire charge. Send an enquiry through our functions page or email thenellymorley1@gmail.com with your date and rough guest numbers.
Is The Nelson Arms wheelchair accessible?
The main bar, lounge and rear beer garden are on the ground floor and reached from street level. If you need step-free access or particular seating, email us before your visit and we’ll help.
What size functions does The Nelson Arms host?
Small ones — birthdays, christenings, wakes, work dos and community meetings. The Nelly is a community pub rather than an events venue, so send us your date and rough numbers and we will tell you honestly whether we can do it properly. We would rather say no than cram a party into a room that cannot take it.
How much does it cost to hire the function space at The Nelson Arms?
Nothing. There is no hire charge for a function at The Nelson Arms — the lounge and the 600 m² beer garden are free to use, and your guests simply buy their drinks at the bar. Tell us the date and numbers and we will confirm the arrangements.
Can we have food at a function at The Nelson Arms?
BlakJak Pizza bakes in our yard Friday and Saturday, 4pm–8pm, £10–£12 a pizza — a separate, independent Morley business trading from the yard. Bar snacks are available at the bar whenever we are open, and you are welcome to bring in a takeaway from anywhere local.
Is the beer garden covered?
Part of it is. There is around 600 m² of garden with plenty of seating, including a covered section, so an outdoor function does not depend entirely on the weather holding.
Can you host a wake or a celebration of life?
Tell us the date and roughly how many are coming and we will do everything we can. The room is screen-free, quiet in the daytime, and there is a garden to step out into — which is what most families are looking for. Email thenellymorley1@gmail.com or use the enquiry form.
Do you take bookings for Christmas parties and work dos?
Yes — send us the date and numbers through the enquiry form. December also brings our two big DJ nights, Mad Friday and New Year’s Eve, both from 6pm till late, and you can tell us in advance that you are bringing a group to either.
How far is The Nelson Arms from Morley town centre?
About a five-minute walk — 0.3 miles from Morley Town Hall and Queen Street. Morley railway station is roughly 14 minutes on foot, with trains to Leeds every 30 minutes, and bus routes 51 and 52 stop on Victoria Road within two minutes of the door.
Is there a day the pub is closed?
No — we open every day. Monday 4pm–11pm, Tuesday 4pm–11pm, Wednesday 4pm–11pm, Thursday 4pm–11pm, Friday 2pm–11:30pm, Saturday 12pm–midnight and Sunday 12pm–10:30pm. On bank holidays we are open 12pm–10:30pm. That means there is no closed day to work around when you are picking a date.
