See the old year out in a stone-walled Morley pub. On 31 December the DJs start at 6pm and play funk, soul, disco, house, Motown and Northern soul right through midnight and on till late. Real ale on the bar, no TVs on the wall, and a five-minute walk back to most of Morley.

Midnight in Morley doesn’t need a coach to Leeds and back. The Nelson Arms is on Victoria Road, five minutes from the town hall, and on 31 December the DJs take over the front room at 6pm. Funk to start the evening, disco and house as the room fills, and Northern soul for the ones who don’t want to go home.

How the night goes

Six till late — and the pub doesn’t rush you.

New Year’s Eve is the one night of the year nobody wants to be watching a clock. Here is roughly how it runs at The Nelly.

  • 6:00pm: the DJs start. Early enough to come straight from the afternoon, early enough to get a seat.
  • Evening: the floor fills and the set moves through funk, soul and disco.
  • Towards midnight: house and Motown — the ones everybody knows every word to.
  • Midnight: and then the DJs carry on till late.

Drinks are on the bar as usual — Yorkshire cask, the draught list and no screens anywhere in the building.

Why here, not the big venues

No queue, no coach, no screens

  • A five-minute walk home

For most of Morley this is the nearest New Year’s Eve in town. No last train to catch, no coach booked for midnight, no surcharge for the privilege.

  • Records, not playlists

Funk, soul, disco, house, Motown and Northern soul, chosen by DJs who read the room rather than an algorithm on shuffle.

  • Room to breathe

A stone-walled pub with a 600 m² beer garden and seats for 100+ outdoors. When the front room gets warm, there is somewhere to go.

Before the night

Plan the journey home in daylight

Festive timetables are shorter than usual and every pub in Morley is busy at the same time. Work out how you’re getting home before you set off, not at 1am.

  • By bus: Bus routes 51 and 52 from Leeds city centre stop on Victoria Road, within two minutes’ walk of the front door. Check the route 51 and 52 timetables for 31 December in advance.
  • By train: Morley railway station is about 0.7 miles away — roughly a 14-minute walk — with trains to Leeds every 30 minutes (around 9 minutes). Last services on New Year’s Eve end earlier than a normal night.
  • By car: Free on-site car park with around 12 spaces, plus free on-street parking on Victoria Road. Leave it overnight if you’re drinking — plan not to drive home.
